Welcome to my corner of the internet
An introduction to this site and what you can expect to find here.
Hello and welcome! I'm excited to share this space with you.
Who I am
I'm Richard Freeman, a Senior Scientific Sales Consultant with a PhD in molecular microbiology. Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of working at the intersection of cutting-edge science and commercial strategy, helping innovative biotech companies bring their products to market.
From the bench to the boardroom
My journey began in the lab, where I spent years studying bacterial gene expression using quantitative PCR (qPCR). During my PhD at Heriot-Watt University, I developed standardized qPCR methodologies that were adopted as the standard protocols by the university's qPCR Core Facility.
While I loved the precision and discovery of laboratory research, I found myself increasingly drawn to the challenge of translating scientific innovations into real-world applications. This led me to transition into commercial roles at companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Roche Diagnostics, and Roslin Technologies.
The move from bench scientist to sales professional wasn't always easy, but it taught me something valuable: the best solutions emerge when you combine deep technical expertise with an understanding of market needs.
What drives me
Today, through my consultancy Cervus Consulting, I help emerging biotech companies navigate the complex journey from innovation to commercialization. I'm particularly passionate about the cultivated meat sector, where scientific breakthroughs are creating new possibilities for sustainable food production.
I also serve as a Sales Mentor for organizations including Big Idea Ventures, the Good Food Institute, and the Catalonia Trade & Investment Board. Supporting the next generation of biotech entrepreneurs is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
What you'll find here
